More than 130 junta soldiers who were defeated militarily by the Arakkha Army (AA) in Arakan State, where conflict between regime and AA forces is ongoing and often fierce, fled into Bangladesh from May 3-5, according to local news outlets in the South Asian country.

A total of 132 of the junta’s border guard force members crossed the Naf River, surrendered to the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and sought refuge in Bangladesh during the three-day period, the Dhaka Tribune reported.

“In the past, the Myanmar military used to say that it would be built as a standard army. Now, the Myanmar military has completely lost its fighting spirit and has reached the stage of a fugitive army,” said one military and political analyst. “The junta soldiers are fleeing to every country bordering Myanmar. The ability and dignity of the Myanmar military will not be admired by any neighbouring countries.”

Junta soldiers and BGF members have for months fled to Bangladesh as AA advances have seen regime positions fall across Arakan State since November.

On April 25, Bangladeshi authorities handed over to Myanmar 288 junta soldiers and BGF members who fled to Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government handed over 330 Myanmar BGF members and their families who sought refuge in Bangladesh to the military regime on February 15.

Fierce clashes are reported in Maungdaw District amid an ongoing AA offensive. The AA has recently seized four junta battalions and a military command base in Maungdaw District.
