Fire razes buildings in old Sittwe University compound
A fire broke out inside the old Sittwe University compound near U Ottama Park in the Arakan State capital on February 9, destroying some of the buildings formerly used by students and staff, locals said.

A fire broke out inside the old Sittwe University compound near U Ottama Park in the Arakan State capital on February 9, destroying some of the buildings formerly used by students and staff, locals said.
The fire started in one of those buildings at around 3:45 p.m. but the cause of the blaze is not yet known. No one was living in the destroyed buildings, which were constructed largely of wood, when the fire broke out.
“At first, we thought that it was windy and raining, but it was fire,” said a woman who lives near the university. “Students tried to spread water near the fire in order to prevent other houses or buildings from catching fire. We were so worried because it was so windy during the fire.”
A total of 10 fire trucks were dispatched to the scene and the fire was extinguished at around 4:20 p.m. No one was injured in the incident.
Residents are urging authorities to arrange to clear trash and brush near the university compound, which they say are tinder for potential future conflagrations.
