ALP member abducted by unidentified group

An unidentified group has abducted a member of the Arakan Liberation Party (ALP) from his home in Sarpyin village, Taungup Township, according to the missing man’s family.

Daw Htay Htay Win, his wife, told DMG: “Five unidentified persons holding guns and swords arrested U Win Hlaing from the house at around 8 p.m. on May 31. They said they took my husband for interrogation.”

Ten people bearing firearms reportedly entered Sarpyin village on five motorbikes on May 31, searching for the houses of the village administrator and U Win Hlaing. They did not find the village administrator and abducted U Win Hlaing, according to an eyewitness.

“They did not wear any facemasks. They searched for the houses of the village administrator and acupuncturist at the same time, by dividing into two groups,” the eyewitness said.

“His body will be found if he has been killed,” Police Major Than Naing, head of the Taungup Township police, told DMG.

The ALP/ALA (Arakan Liberation Party/Army) issued a statement on June 1 addressing the abduction of U Win Hlaing, saying the ULA/AA (United League of Arakan/Arakan Army) detained him.

But Khaing Thukha, spokesperson for the Arakan Army, told Myanmar Now that the AA did not arrest him.
