The senior monk of the Thein Tan village monastery in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, has spearheaded an effort to restore the crown of the township’s Mahamuni Pagoda Buddha image, said the chairperson of the pagoda’s board of trustees.

Thein Tan Sayadaw U Eaindamarla and more than 40 monks from Mrauk-U and Kyauktaw townships put the crown in place on the afternoon of June 5, said U Nyo Thar Hla, the pagoda trustees’ leader.

More than 10,000 people from 12 village-tracts of Kyauktaw Township including members of civil society organisations had removed the crown and sash from the Mahamuni Pagoda’s Buddha image in February 2017 to refashion the Buddha image in the original, ancient style.

“We placed the crown by reciting Yadana and Metta suttas and making merit. We did not restore the sash,” said Thein Tan Sayadaw.

But public criticisms have been raised over the fact that neither the Kyauktaw Township Sangha Nayaka Committee nor the general public were not notified of the restoration.

“If we were to wait for the agreement of all people, we could not restore it,” Thein Tan Sayadaw said.

Ko Zaw Win, a resident of Kyauktaw town who participated in the 2017 movement to remove the crown, said restoring it without notifying the public amounted to insulting the people.

“Residents are not satisfied now. Some people said it was a yadaya,” said Ko Thar Zan from Thayet Tabin village, which is located near the pagoda, referring to ritualistic practices intended to ward off misfortune.

The crown, sash and other related accessories were placed at the Mahamuni Buddha image in 1994 at the instruction of then-General Khin Nyunt, Myanmar’s former military intelligence chief. Let's assume you needed to go to a global meeting or have an excursion in only a couple of days.
