Unconsumable foods are mostly found in rural areas of Arakan State, said the Rakhine Youth New Generation (RYNG).

Moreover, 70 percent of imported foods in the market lack brand names and expiration dates, the RYNG said.

“We found that public awareness about consuming healthy food is not good when people in villages, markets and schools lack the knowledge and education about healthy nutrition,” said Ma Oo Khin Thein, an in-charge of the RYNG.

“The FDA released a list of foods that should not be consumed after they were tested. However, people had already eaten the tainted food. These spoiled food products are mostly found in some villages in remote area. They are still being sold in rural areas,” she said.

Manufacturers should consider the health of consumers because their health is vital for their life, said Ma Win Win Aye from Sittwe.

“We are concerned about the quality of some foods because of technological advances in food processing. We cannot know if some foods have been chemical treated or if the food is one-hundred percent natural,” she said.

A seminar to raise awareness about food manufacturing and marketing was hosted in Sittwe on May 5 aiming to promote food safety for consumers.
