Since civilians were killed or injured or detained in some villages in Arakan State, a group of monks, politicians, town elders and CSOs in Sittwe called on the Union government to end the havoc that’s been occurring at the expense of blameless villagers due to the Tatmadaw’s gunfire.
“We let people know that we sent the request letter to Amyotha and Pyithu Hluttaw addressing the President, State Counsellor and Commander-in-Chief. The letter was sent on May 9,” said U Aung Htay, chairperson of Western Door Region Relief Organization.
The letter also requests the government to find a solution through political means for the ongoing conflicts in Arakan State and to take responsibility for IDPs’ living, health and education.
If authorities fail to fulfill the demands, mass demonstrations will be held on May 19, the letter said.
Sayardaw U Sanda Vara, secretary of Sittwe Township Sangha Nayaka Committee, said: “We will do it, it depends on the desire of our people. If the government does not satisfy our demands, we will negotiate with people about what they want to do.”
The group demands the state leaders to meet their demand by May 17.
