Two men allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl in Arakan State’s Ann Township on December 21, with one remaining at large, according to the township police and the victim’s family.

The girl encountered the two drunken men on Monday evening while she was returning to her home after watching TV at a house five doors down from her own, said her family members, adding that the men took her to the other side of a creek in the village.

“I heard someone crying on the other side of the creek while I was sitting at home. So I told my husband to go and check because I was worried for my daughters,” said the victim’s mother. “He saw one of my daughter’s slippers and her clothes. So, he informed the police and the village administrator. One of them was arrested.”

Ko Thet Pyin, 22, from Kandate village has been detained at the Ann Myoma police station and 25-year-old Maung Thaung Pe of the same village is still at large, her family members said.

A case against them has opened under Sections 376 and 114 of the Penal Code, covering rape and abetment respectively, according to the family.

“The investigation is ongoing to be able to arrest the other one,” an officer at the Ann Myoma police station said.

U Kyaw San Naing of the Thazin Legal Institute in Ann Township said he would provide legal assistance to the victim.

“She is about 16 years old. So, we can classify this as a child rape. We will prosecute the case at the district court. We are now counselling her,” he said.
