Strand Road and View Point Beach in Sittwe will be closed on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. due to the continuing spread of Covid-19 in Arakan State, according to the state’s military council.

The popular hangouts will be off-limits to the public on weekends until further notice, and those who do not comply will see action taken against them, said U Than Tun, a member of the Arakan State military council.

“View Point Beach and Strand Road in Sittwe will be closed for the two days, Saturday and Sunday, because those two days are full of visitors. View Point Beach and Strand Road will be open to the public on all days except Saturdays and Sundays,” he told DMG.

The Arakan State Administration Council told media at a press conference on July 14 that it would take action under the Police Act or the Natural Disaster Management Law against those not abiding by regulations limiting gatherings and requiring masking in public.

“For the first time, those who do not wear masks will be fined K500 and given a mask. After that, those who do not wear masks will be punished in accordance with the law,” U Than Tun said.

During the ongoing third wave of Covid-19 (since May), a total of 996 infections and 17 deaths had been recorded in Arakan State as of July 13, according to the Arakan State Department of Public Health.

Since Myanmar’s first case was reported in March 2020, the country had recorded 201,274 total Covid-19 infections as of July 13, with 4,036 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health and Sports.
