The Karen National Union’s Brigade 2 used an explosive device to attack a convoy of Myanmar military troops that was departing Thandaung town, Kayin State, at about 6:15 p.m. on November 25.
The blast came at a location along the Thandaung-Pyar Sakhan road and the two sides subsequently exchanged fire, a local resident told DMG.
“I heard the explosion of a landmine. It was relatively loud. Then, I heard sounds of gunfire between two groups,” she said.
The exchange of gunfire lasted about 10 minutes, she added, and nearly a dozen vehicles carrying junta forces left for Taungoo, in Bago Region, at 7 p.m., after stopping at Pyar Sakhan village.
“I saw a vehicle tipped over at the roadside,” a witness said of the site of the attack. “There might have been dead bodies. But I do not know exactly because I dared not look closely.”
Clashes broke out between the Karenni National Defense Force and junta troops in June and July, with the regime reinforcing its troops via the Taungoo-Thandaung road.
