Report to chief minister for protection of Mrauk-U cultural heritage site
The Mrauk-U Ancient Cultural Heritage Conservation Group reported to Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu on March 18 to carry out necessary activities to protect the Mrauk-U region in a timely fashion because bullets and artillery shells fired by the Tatmadaw landed in the Mrauk-U ancient cultural heritage zone.

The Mrauk-U Ancient Cultural Heritage Conservation Group reported to Rakhine State Chief Minister U Nyi Pu on March 18 to carry out necessary activities to protect the Mrauk-U region in a timely fashion because bullets and artillery shells fired by the Tatmadaw landed in the Mrauk-U ancient cultural heritage zone.
On March 15, an artillery shell destroyed the bottom of the ancient pagoda, West Myede near Lay Myet Hna pagoda and an ancient heritage conservation building near Htone Kan Thame temple.
“We formed different levels of committees to list Mrauk-U as a world heritage site. So, we presented a report to the chief minister who is also chairperson of Mrauk-U Administration Committee so he is up to date on the situation in the cultural heritage zone,” said Daw Khin Than, chairperson of the Mrauk-U Ancient Cultural Heritage Conservation Group.
On March 16, four pagodas in the Ta Khwet Saya mountain range were set on fire and on March 17, the sound of gunshots and explosions were heard in the western mountain range, according to the group
The exact number of destroyed ancient pagodas and temples cannot be known at the moment.
