The Arakan Army (AA) released the township administrator and his driver from its custody at a location between Yoengu and Kyaukseik villages in Arakan State’s Ponnagyun Township on Saturday, the ethnic armed group said in a statement.

On July 17, the Arakan Army detained U Hla Shwe, 53, the Ponnagyun Township administrator, and his driver Maung Kyaw Naing, 30, for questioning during their return to Ponnagyun from Kyauktaw.

“The Myanmar military is entering communities in Arakan State, arresting and imprisoning innocent civilians accused of being involved with the ULA/AA under various [pretences],” the Arakan Army said in the statement, referring also to its political wing, the United League of Arakan (ULA). “According to the requirements of the situation, the Arakan Army has to detain and interrogate them if they have anything to do with the Myanmar military.”

The ULA/AA detained and interrogated the two men as required by the situation and the pair were found to be unrelated to the Myanmar military and were released safely, the statement added.

The Arakan Army this week urged local people to exercise caution while travelling in the state, citing the military regime’s recent arrests of dozens civilians on a variety of specious grounds.
