A police sergeant was detained by members of the Arakan Army in Maei town, part of Arakan State’s Taungup Township, at about 9 p.m. on August 1, locals said.

The detainee has been identified as Police Sergeant Tun Shwe Maung, 50, said an unnamed source from Maei police station.

“He [Police Sergeant Tun Shwe Maung] was arrested by AA members in front of a kindergarten in Ward-2 of Maei town while going to the police station by motorbike. I don’t know exactly why he was arrested or his whereabouts,” the unnamed police officer added.

The Myanmar military summoned the administrators of Maei’s Ward-1, Ward-2, Ward-3 and Ward-4 for questioning following the AA’s detention of the policeman, according to a ward administrator who spoke on condition of anonymity.

“The Myanmar military summoned the ward administrators in downtown Maei for questioning after the AA abducted the police sergeant. The detained police sergeant has a good attitude. I don’t know why he was arrested,” the unnamed ward administrator added.

Junta soldiers are currently deployed in Maei town and conducting security checks on locals, according to residents.

The military arrested some residents in Sanae town and charged one of the detainees with incitement under Section 505(a) of the Penal Code after a police officer was detained by the Arakan Army on July 24.
