The Myanmar military arrested two men in downtown wards of Minbya, Arakan State, at around 2 p.m. on September 20, according to residents.

The detainees have been identified as U Nyi Nyi, 41, from Thabyaynyo Ward and U Maung Maung, a 37-year-old man from Pyidawhla Ward in Minbya. Around 50 junta soldiers patrolled downtown Minbya and detained the two men, said a local who declined to be named for security reasons.

“Local authorities cut off the power when the junta troops entered Minbya town. The junta soldiers patrolled around downtown Minbya, took positions in front of some shops and arrested the two men. Power had been restored when they [junta soldiers] left the town,” the unnamed resident explained.

Some eyewitnesses said the two men were taken to the local police station, but they are not currently at the police station, the unnamed resident added.

“The junta soldiers told family members of the detainees, ‘Don’t worry.’ We don’t know their whereabouts and where they were taken. The pair hasn’t been seen or heard from since their arrest,” said Ma Ye May Nu, the younger sister of U Nyi Nyi.

Junta soldiers are currently stationed in Minbya, where local people are worried about their safety.
