Dr. Kyaw Thura, a resident of Taungup who was detained by the Myanmar military, was charged under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act on September 23, according to family members.

Dr. Kyaw Thura was arrested on September 6, transferred to the Taungup police station and charged with unlawful association after being questioned for more than two weeks, said Daw Moe Moe Wah, the wife of the accused.

“The military filed a case against my husband under Section 17(1) of the Unlawful Associations Act at Taungup police station on September 23. He has no links with any organisations. He is currently being held in police custody and we are making arrangements for his health,” she told DMG.

Daw Moe Moe Wah added that Dr. Kyaw Thura’s health is a concern.

“I was allowed to meet him at the police station. I regularly send food for him. He had his blood pressure taken in custody yesterday. His immune system is weak because he hasn’t eaten well while in military custody,” she said.

DMG attempted to obtain comment from Police Captain Zaw Latt, head of the Taungup police station, regarding the case against Dr. Kyaw Thura, but he could not be reached.

The military has detained at least seven residents of Taungup Township since September 17.
