The Rakhine State Disaster Relief Committee (in Yangon) on Monday donated K24 million to IDPs in Minbya, Mrauk-U, Kyauktaw, Ponnagyun, Buthidaung and Rathedaung Townships.

There are over 20,000 IDPs in the six townships in dire need of accommodations and food supplies due to the ongoing battles between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA) in Rakhine State.

The committee handed over a specific amount of financial aid to relevant MPs and CSOs depending on the number of IDPs in each township, said U Aye Maung, chairperson of the committee.

“Food and accommodations are the main things they need. Although our donation is not enough for them, we provided as much as we could,” he said.

“In the summer, villagers face water shortages. So, there will be problems for both villagers and war refugees using water. Since there is a huge crowd, toilets are also important for them,” said Daw Khin Saw Wei, Pyithu Hluttaw representative for Rathedaung Township.

The battles between the Tatmadaw and AA have been continuing for four months and the number of IDPs is going up on a daily basis.
