Manaung Twsp in need of oxygen plant

Charities in Manaung Township have stressed the need to keep oxygen reserves due to logistical difficulties with transporting oxygen to the town, which is only accessible by water. 

A Covid-19 patient on oxygen support died on Thursday due to lack of access to oxygen, chairman of Say Tanar Shin social organisation U Kyaw Moe Naing told DMG. 

“A patient died due to the lack of oxygen yesterday. Despite the fact that doctors and nurses were trying, the two oxygen concentrators broke down. And oxygen cylinders could not be delivered from Kyaukphyu because of the bad weather. And the patient died as a result,” he said. 

The charity was not able to fetch the oxygen cylinders sent from Kyaukphyu until noon on Friday due to weather conditions, said U Kyaw Moe Naing. 

Residents have been trying to build an oxygen plant in the town, and are soliciting donations. 

The oxygen plant is expected to cost K80 million, and so far K30 million has been donated to the fund, said U Kyaw Mya, who is leading the working group to build the plant.  

“As we don’t know when this pandemic will be over, an oxygen plant has become a necessity. I would like to urge the donors to make contributions so that we can build it as soon as possible,” he said. 

The township also has difficulties acquiring medicine needed to treat coronavirus. As of Friday, 24 cases with four deaths had been reported in the town, and 15 are receiving treatment in hospital.
