An Arakanese man was shot dead in Yangon’s Tamwe Township on Friday morning, according to his family, with the perpetrator reportedly still at large.

The victim was identified as Ko Thet Zaw, a 40-year-old man from Tawlel village in Arakan State’s Lay Taung, part of Ramree Township. A family member said he was working as a goldsmith in Yangon with a cousin.

“It is true that Ko Thet Zaw was shot dead while going outside in the morning. He died of five gunshot wounds. We don’t know why he was shot dead,” the family member added.

“Ko Thet Zaw’s parents live in Lay Taung town. They were informed of Ko Thet Zaw’s death this morning. His parents are old,” a local resident of Tawlel village said on Friday.

Family members say it is not yet known who fired the shots that killed Ko Thet Zaw.

Many people from Arakan State seek work in the commercial capital Yangon, where job opportunities are relatively plentiful compared with their hometowns and villages.
