Five people were killed and one other was injured after the boundary wall of a high school collapsed in the Mon State capital Mawlamyine on Friday morning, according to locals.

A resident said that the west wall of the school in Mawlamyine’s Shwetaung ward was cracked due to heavy rains since the night of July 21, and it collapsed at 9:30 a.m. on July 22.

“The brick boundary wall fell on a tea shop next to it, and some people in the shop got trapped under the debris. Five died on the spot, and one other was hospitalised,” the resident added.

Two men and three women were killed, and one man was sent to Mawlamyine Hospital, according to local rescue workers.

“A young man in his 20s is among the deceased,” said a rescue worker from a local social organisation.

One person was killed in a similar wall collapse in August of last year, according to residents of Shwetaung ward.

“This is the second time the school wall collapsed. A person was killed in a wall collapse in the rainy season in 2021,” said a resident of Mawlamyine.

Rescue workers from five local social organizations carried out search and rescue operations on Friday and the bodies of the deceased were sent to Mawlamyine Hospital.
