Si Taung shooting forced entire village displacement

The Tatmadaw shot heavy weapons and guns on March 21 in Si Taung village, Buthidaung Township, killing six people, destroying some houses and displacing all villagers.

There are nearly 400 houses in Si Taung village, and all the villagers fled to nearby villages such as Zedi Taung and Sin Khone Daing villages.

“All villagers fled from their village fearful and panic stricken,” said Ashin Nayaka from Buthidaung Township.

Over ten people were injured and five of them sustained severe injuries, some villagers received minor injuries. They were sent to Sittwe hospital.  The remaining people were sent to Zedi Taung cottage hospital, according to locals.

Some houses in Si Taung village were destroyed and shells were found in the village, some people from the village who observed the incident said.

“Some houses were destroyed by heavy weapons. We did not see the whole village.  Almost all of the village was destroyed. Some houses caught fire,” Ashin Nayaka said.

The Tatmadaw denied that casualties of Si Taung village were the result of an attack carried out by the Tatmadaw and claimed that it was the result of a shootout between the Tatmadaw and AA. However, the AA responded that there was no such clash in the village.
