Garuna Uyin, a monastic school in Ahtet Laynyintaung Village in the Laymyochaung area, part of Arakan State’s Mrauk-U Township, is reportedly in need of financial assistance, according to officials.

As the school cannot hire the teachers it needs, the students are struggling to pursue their education, said Venerable Vasudeva, presiding monk of the monastic school.

“We cannot provide financial assistance to the teachers sufficiently. We made a decision to provide education to the students with the teachers here,” the monk added.

There are about 100 students ranging from KG to Grade 11 and eight teachers at the monastic school.

“There are not enough teachers, so I have to combine two classes at the same time. While we can take good care of our students, it is also difficult for them,” said Daw Aye Thawdar Kyi, a female teacher from the monastic school.

There was an increase of about 30 students at the monastic school this year. The monastic school didn’t accept some students due to financial difficulties.

The monastic school relies on donations contributed by donors at home and abroad. A school official said that since there were fewer donors at the monastic school, there were not enough school supplies for the students following the storm.

The monastic school also provides English language and computer training courses to the students.

“We provide English language and computer training courses to students who passed the matriculation examination. Being able to send some students to relevant courses locally is a success,” the monk said.

The monastic school is home to dozens of students from poor families from at least 10 villages in the Laymyochaung area.

The monastic school was established in 2010 and has turned out 32 students who passed the matriculation examination.
