An initial trial to establish a freshwater shrimp hatchery has been arranged in Arakan State, U Thet Oo, director of the Department of Fisheries, told DMG.

The shrimp hatchery will be established in one of three Arakan State townships: Kyauktaw, Mrauk-U or Ponnagyun.

“There is no shrimp hatchery in Arakan State. Freshwater shrimp live in the area between freshwater and saltwater, so we will have to establish the hatchery at a township with such a water area,” he said.

The trial will determine whether freshwater shrimp can be raised and sold to both domestic and foreign markets, he added.

“It is not certain to export abroad, but it is certain to send them to other parts of Myanmar,” he said.

A fund of more than K500 million from the state budget will reportedly be spent to establish the hatchery on a trial basis.

There are three saltwater hatcheries in Arakan State: Zediya hatchery in Kyaukphyu Township, Soe Mae Kyi hatchery in Pauktaw Township and Yay Chan Pyin hatchery in Sittwe Township.
