Police in Maungdaw Township, Arakan State, have arrested four suspects in connection with the killing of a General Administration Department (GAD) employee, according to the Maungdaw District police force.

The victim has been identified as Ko Hsan Htay Naing, 26, a village clerk from the Myinlut town GAD.  He was found dead on Thursday morning near the No. 1 entry and exit port of Maungdaw, with multiple wounds including a cut on his neck and a bruised face.

“The victim is an employee from the General Administration Department and was found dead with many injuries,” said Ko Chit Htoo Naing, chairman of the Karuna Network Foundation.

A murder case has been filed under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Four Muslims from Faysi village, near where Ko Hsan Htay Naing’s body was found, are being questioned, said a police officer from the Maungdaw District police force who declined to be named.

“One suspect was identified with the help of the victim’s mobile phone. Other suspects are being interrogated,” the officer added.

“The police arrested some suspects and are questioning them,” said Police Captain Myint Kyaw Oo, commander of Maungdaw Myoma police station.

In a statement on December 17, the United League of Arakan (ULA) — the Arakan Army’s political wing — said some townships in Arakan State had experienced a “series of extraordinary events” this month that it warned could lead to sectarian conflict.
