Wildfire spreads to village in Mrauk-U Township, destroys homes
A wildfire broke out on the afternoon of March 18 along a mountain range near Peepinyin village in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan State, with the flames spreading to a residential area and destroying seven homes, residents said.

A wildfire broke out on the afternoon of March 18 along a mountain range near Peepinyin village in Mrauk-U Township, Arakan State, with the flames spreading to a residential area and destroying seven homes, residents said.
The wildfire started in the mountains about 200 yards from Peepinyin and wind-borne sparks reaching the village set houses ablaze, according to U Maung San, administrator of Peepinyin village.
“The roofs of the houses are made with nipa palm leaves. So, sparks from the forest fire set fire to our houses and spread to nearby houses,” he said.
U Maung Kyat Than said his house was under construction and all the building materials went up in flames.
“The whole house burned to ash. I lost more than K10 million kyats [US$7,400] because I am still building the new house. I am so sad,” he said.
With all of his possessions destroyed but for the clothes on his back, U Maung Kyat Than said he was facing a difficult future, lacking food, shelter and clothing.
There were no reports of injuries to people or livestock due to the fire, according to residents.
