A woman died and three other people were injured in a road accident on Monday near Kyaukseik village in Ponnagyun Township.

The deceased was a 40-year-old mother, Daw Aye Win Nwe from Mrauk-U who was working as a watchwoman at a factory near the scene of the accident. She was fatally struck by a six-wheeled vehicle while hailing an auto rickshaw to send her two children to school, said Ko Myo Myat Thargi from the Shwe Yaung Metta social organisation.

“The two children were on the auto rickshaw, and their mother was standing beside them when the vehicle hit her fatally,” he said.

The woman’s son was critically wounded and sent to Sittwe General Hospital, while her daughter sustained slight injuries to her arms.

The auto rickshaw driver also suffered an eye wound and is receiving treatment at Ponnagyun Hospital. A 2-year-old toddler was also at the scene when the accident took place, but survived unscathed, said Ko Myo Myat Thargi.

The 50-year-old driver of the six-wheeled truck has been arrested.
