The National League for Democracy (NLD) has announced that four members of its Central Executive Committee, including the ousted Chief Minister of Yangon Region, U Phyo Min Thein, have officially been expelled.

“Some members of the party do not respect the will of the people and are against the position of the party, misusing the name of the party and following the will of the military dictator for their own benefit,” the NLD said in a statement on Friday.

Those who have been expelled are Central Executive Member U Phyo Min Thein, and Central Committee members Daw Sandar Min, U Toe Lwin and U Win Myint Aung, the NLD Central Working Committee announced.

“These four individuals are those who gave false testimony against NLD Chairperson Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, and those who have turned their backs on the will of the people and are working against the party’s policies,” the statement said.

While the military regime is trying to deceive the public and the world by organising a sham election, these four people are not respecting the will of the people, the statement alleges.

The NLD won Myanmar’s 2020 general election in a landslide, but the country’s military leaders claimed that there was voter fraud and seized power on February 1, 2021. All of the NLD’s top leaders, including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and President U Win Myint, were imprisoned on various charges that critics of the regime say are baseless.
