A man infected with Covid-19 died on July 6 in Taungup Township, Arakan State, becoming the fifth in the state to succumb to the virus during the ongoing third wave of the pandemic in Myanmar.

The deceased was from Mo Hin Taw village in Taungup Township, and had gone to a clinic on July 5 after losing his sense of smell. He tested positive for Covid-19 under monitor and died while receiving treatment.

“He died at 9 p.m. yesterday. He also had an underlying disease, and so, he died while he had been receiving treatment under monitor,” said U Than Win, head of the Taungup Township Information and Public Relations Department.

The 40-year-old Covid-19 patient had hypertension as an underlying condition.

Currently, family members of the deceased have been closely monitored at their home, and the body of the man was to be cremated on July 7.

The death from the disease was Taungup’s first out of three confirmed Covid-19 cases in the township, and the number of coronavirus-linked deaths in Arakan State rose to five since the third wave of the virus hit Myanmar in late May.

The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in Arakan State surpassed 500 this week, spread across 11 of the state’s 17 townships.
