A man from Chin State’s Paletwa Township was reportedly detained by the Myanmar military on Saturday night, according to locals.

The detainee has been identified as U Maung Me Kyawt, a 57-year-old resident of Paletwa’s Myoma ward. He was taken to the base of the military’s Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) No. 289 for questioning, said a resident of Paletwa who declined to be named for security reasons.

“He was taken from his home to the Light Infantry Battalion No. 289 for questioning at around 9 p.m. yesterday,” the unnamed resident told DMG on Sunday.

A family member said that U Maung Me Kyawt was taken away by eight fully armed soldiers. The family is worried about the wellbeing of the detainee because he is in poor health.

“He was not handcuffed when taken away by the junta soldiers. Junta soldiers covered his head with a black bag and took him to LIB No. 289 by motorboat,” the family member added.

The family member alleged that U Maung Me Kyawt was arrested on suspicion of having illegal ties to the Arakan Army (AA), a claim DMG was unable to confirm as of press time.

Major-General Zaw Min Tun, a spokesperson for the military regime aka State Administration Council, was not available for comment

U Thar Tun Aung, the administrator of Abaung Thar village in Chin State’s Paletwa Township, was taken away by the Myanmar military after regime forces clashed with the Arakan Army on May 26. He has not yet been released, according to his family.
