Junta soldiers reportedly abducted a member of the local administrative body and a resident from their home in Gonechein Village in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, on the night of April 19.

Around 30 junta soldiers in two military trucks took Daw Nu Nu Chay, a 43-year-old 10-household head and her younger brother Ko Maung Shae, 33, from their home.

“Junta soldiers conducted an overnight guest check at around 9 p.m. and arrested the two siblings for questioning from their home,” said a Kyaukphyu resident.

The reason for the arrest and their whereabouts remain unknown, according to family members.

The regime detained U Maung Aye Kyi, the administrator of Gonechein Village, on April 12 and he has not yet been released. The junta detained U Tun Lwin, chairman of the Kyaukphyu Township branch of the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD), on April 14.

“The regime arrests youth activists, politicians and administrators. Most activists have gone into hiding and those who do not go into hiding are arrested by the regime,” said a ward administrator.

The regime has detained at least 20 civilians in Kyaukphyu Township since January of this year. Family members are worried about the safety of detainees who have not been released yet and whose whereabouts remain unknown.

“During this period, it is best for people not to stay in junta-held areas. The military regime, which is losing the war, is projecting their shame on the people. If the people are not careful, they will suffer the evil actions of the military regime,” said a local resident in Kyaukphyu.

Clashes between the military and Arakha Army (AA) are reported in Kyaukphyu Township, with military tensions between the two sides running high.
