Junta-Arakan Army clash reported near Taung Maw Oo naval station in Kyaukphyu Twsp

Heavy clashes have broken out between the military junta and the Arakan Army near the Taung Maw Oo naval station in Kyaukphyu Township, Arakan State, with both sides exchanging heavy artillery fire, according to military sources.

Following a weeklong lull in fighting near the junta naval station, intense clashes resumed on August 12 as military junta columns advanced, sources said.

"Fighting resumed in recent days because the regime launched an offensive toward Awa Taung Village. Although the Arakan Army is not conducting offensive operations, it is carrying out counterattacks and interceptions based on the military junta's movements and offensives. Both Arakan Army and junta troops are primarily relying on heavy artillery support during the fighting," a military source said.

Clashes are currently taking place near Awa Taung, Thaingchaung and Minpyin villages in Kyaukphyu Township, where the Arakan Army is conducting counterattacks in response to junta offensives, military sources said.

The military junta has frequently launched drone strikes on active battlefields to provide fire support for its ground offensives, sources added.

A young Arakanese military observer noted that the military junta is using Chinese projects in Kyaukphyu Township as a shield to resist Arakan Army offensives, committing all available resources to defend its position.

"Kyaukphyu is the lifeline for the military junta on the Arakan front. It is the only front where Chinese backing can be leveraged. They are defending against Arakan Army offensives primarily by using Chinese projects as a protective shield under the guise of protecting them. If Kyaukphyu falls, the military's presence in Arakan State could come to an end, which is why the regime is committing all available resources to defend Kyaukphyu," he said.

Clashes between the Arakan Army and the regime have raged in Kyaukphyu Township since early 2025, marking a frontline where territorial control between both sides shifts frequently.
