Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and the Arakan Army (AA) held a meeting in Teknaf on January 13 to discuss ongoing clashes along the Bangladesh-Arakan border in northern Maungdaw Township, Arakan State.
Top officials from both sides attended the meeting, which was arranged by Bangladesh following recent border clashes, according to local sources.
During the discussions, officials reviewed the recent fighting, border security, Muslim armed group activity, fishermen-related issues, and avenues for bilateral cooperation, sources familiar with the situation told DMG.
DMG is in contact with Arakan Army spokesman U Khaing Thukha for further details about the meeting.
Separately, the Bangladeshi Foreign Ministry summoned Myanmar Ambassador U Kyaw Soe Moe on January 13 and issued a warning, according to the Dhaka Tribune.
The move followed shelling and explosions on the Bangladesh side of the border during clashes on January 11, when Muslim militants attacked Arakan Army security outposts near Kyee Island and Milepost 45 in northern Maungdaw.
A 12-year-old girl was reportedly injured in a bullet-riddled explosion in Teknaf Township during the fighting.
Bangladesh authorities said 53 Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) members who fled into Bangladesh during the clashes were arrested and charged with illegal entry. Of them, 52 were produced in court on January 13, while one, who was seriously injured, is receiving treatment at a hospital in Chittagong.
Bangladesh warned that the shelling of its territory was a serious concern, calling it a violation of international law and an obstacle to maintaining good neighborly relations.
Following these incidents, the Arakan Army has reportedly increased security along the Arakan-Bangladesh border, deploying full manpower and weapons to clear Muslim armed groups from the area.
