The military junta launched waves of heavy airstrikes near the U Sun Mountain range west of Apaukwa Village in Kyauktaw Township, Arakan State, on the morning of October 20.
From 3:00 AM until after 4:00 AM on October 20, junta jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft dropped more than 20 bombs along the U Soan Mountain ridge.
“Jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft bombed the area continuously, dropping 500-pound bombs as well,” said a local woman in Kyauktaw Township. “There were at least five jet fighters and three Y-12 aircraft. The bombing went on for nearly the entire night, with one aircraft arriving after another.”
The U Sun Mountain range connects to Mt. Kansauk, with Lower U Sun, Upper U Sun, Nyalikan, Kanchaypyin and Nichay villages situated nearby.
During earlier clashes, junta troops from Artillery Battalion 377, previously based near Kansauk Village, were stationed along the heights of the U Sun Mountain range.
The airstrikes caused widespread panic among residents of nearby villages, prompting some to flee to safer areas.
“Village residents are terrified,” said a local man from the Apaukwa area in Kyauktaw Township. “The bombs hit close to villages, and aircraft hovered overhead for nearly an hour. Those who could afford it fled the area. People are terrified when aircraft arrive in fleets to drop bombs.”
On October 8, junta jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft bombed Yokethar Village and the Hminechaung mountain range in Kyauktaw Township.
On October 7, regime aircraft dropped hundreds of bombs near the headquarters of Military Operations Command No. 9 (MOC 9) near Kyauktaw town, around Light Infantry Battalion No. 376 near Daungtawyoe Village, at old cemetery grounds, and near Nantat Theim Pagoda close to Kyaungpho Village.
In recent days, the military junta has deployed fleets of aircraft to carry out daily air raids lasting several hours across Arakan State, including Kyauktaw Township, leaving local residents in constant fear.
“Every single air raid drops no fewer than 20 bombs, with at least three or four aircraft participating,” said another male resident of Kyauktaw. “Unlike before, they do not leave after dropping a single bomb. They conduct bombings for hours at a time. The fleet air raids are causing severe psychological trauma, and young children are terrified simply hearing the sound of aircraft.”
In an attempt to reclaim lost territories in Arakan State, the military junta launched offensives using seven military columns on fronts in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu townships, Ayeyarwady, Bago and Magway regions, and Chin State. However, the offensives resulted in heavy casualties and retreats in the face of defensive operations by the Arakan Army.
Following battlefield defeats across Arakan State, the military junta continues to carry out daily, nonstop airstrikes targeting civilian areas, causing a sharp rise in civilian deaths and injuries.
