More than 100 local people displaced by fighting near the Mayan Chaung military checkpoint in Mon State’s Kyaikto Township earlier this week are in need of relief aid.
Junta troops and the Karen National Liberation Army’s (KNLA) Brigade 1 clashed violently near the checkpoint on Monday, forcing villagers from Mayan Chaung village to flee their homes.
“We have had to flee due to the fighting, and also because junta troops searched our village. We need shelter and food. And the weather is too hot,” one Mayan Chaung villager told DMG.
Junta soldiers reportedly detained some villagers from Mayan Chaung following Monday’s fighting.
“Junta troops came to our village yesterday and also this morning. Some dare not go back to their homes, and they remain in the forest. Some villagers were detained, and they have not yet been released,” said another villager.
It was not immediately clear how many villagers were detained.
Junta troops also clashed with the combined forces of KNLA Brigade 1 and other anti-regime fighters in Ingabo village, near the Yangon-Mawlamyine road in Kyaikto Township. Some private vehicles were reportedly damaged in the fighting.
