Two Border Guard Police detained with yaba, AA says

Two police officers from the Thazinmyaing Border Guard outpost in Buthidaung Township, Arakan State, have been detained by the Arakan Army (AA), according to a January 4 statement from the ethnic armed group, which alleged that the two men were found in possession of yaba tablets at the time of their arrest.

The AA statement said its soldiers were checking four suspicious persons in civilian clothes, who were moving between Thazinmyaing and Pyin Shay villages in Buthidaung Township on the morning of January 2, when two of them pulled weapons on the AA contingent and then fled the scene.

The two men who did not flee, and who are currently being held by the AA, are Corporal Aung Kyaw Kyaw and Private Win Moe from the Thazinmyaing Border Guard outpost, the ethnic armed group said. According to its statement, they were found with 12 “WY” yaba tablets, K4.2 million (US$2,800) in cash allegedly received through the sale of additional WY tablets, one bulletproof vest, one grenade, one golden ring and one bank card.

However, the secretary of the Tatmadaw True News Information Team, Colonel Zaw Min Tun, told VOA that the two policemen were attacked by the AA after they had collected their salaries from the Zedipyin police station of Rathaedaung Twonship.
