Burglaries were reported in Arakan State’s Kyauktaw and Maungdaw townships in the early hours of August 17, with the wife of one homeowner attacked in the incident.

A house was burgled at around 2 a.m. on Wednesday in Apaukwa village, Kyauktaw Township. Ten ticals of gold and around K10 million were stolen, said a relative of Daw Cho Cho, the homeowner victim.

Daw Cho Cho was not at home when the break-in happened, said the relative.

“Her mother died at 1:20 a.m. She took her daughter and went to her mother’s house. When she returned to her home at 2 a.m., she found her two boxes emptied. Everything was stolen,” said the relative.

In Maungdaw, armed robbers broke into a house near Myo-U Monastery at around 1 a.m. The wife of the house’s owner was stabbed twice, and belongings worth about K2.5 million were stolen.

“She was stabbed in the belly and in the left arm. She is at the hospital, and is OK. I have filed a complaint with the police,” said her husband, U Khin Maung Lwin, who was not at home at the time of the robbery.

Some towns in Arakan State have recently been hit by a spate of criminal activity, with local residents and civil society organisations (CSOs) saying the worrying trend is the result of weak rule of law.
