At least 12 people including children were killed and 20 others were injured in a late night junta airstrike on Arakan State's Mrauk-U, which is held by the Arakan Army (AA), on Monday.

A junta jet fighter dropped two large bombs on Daing Kyi Ward in Mrauk-U at around 11 p.m. on August 25.

At least 12 civilians including five children were killed, 20 others including three children were wounded, and eight homes were destroyed in the attack.

A local woman said the death toll could rise, with some seriously injured among the wounded.

"The bombs were dropped at night while people were sleeping, without even hearing the sound of fighter jets. There were families in one house who were killed by the bombs. It is also known that there may be more deaths because some people are seriously injured," said the local woman.

The Arakan Army (AA) said the military regime deliberately targeted innocent civilians by taking advantage of people's sleep at night to cause widespread casualties.

Locals say that in the aftermath of the airstrike, there has been less traffic in Mrauk-U's neighbourhoods, and residents are fleeing in fear.

"After the junta airstrike, people became more agitated than usual. There were fewer people in the markets and streets. People were more worried," said a local man in Mrauk-U.

A group monitoring the military regime's airstrikes has announced that the jet fighter that carried out the airstrike on Mrauk-U returned to Nay Pyi Taw Airbase.

The military regime has been conducting frequent airstrikes on townships controlled by the Arakan Army in Arakan State, resulting in increasing casualties.

Human rights activists note that targeting civilians amounts to a war crime.

"The military regime's bombing has caused many people to suffer. The situation in Kyauktaw and Mrauk-U is even worse. I would like to ask the authorities to resolve the issue with both sides of the military and not to target the people. From a human rights perspective, I feel that the people's human rights are being violated," said a female human rights activist in Arakan State.

The Arakan Army issued a statement on Tuesday saying the military regime is committing war crimes by daily bombing non-military targets including schools, hospitals, markets, religious buildings, roads and bridges, displacement camps and densely populated villages across the country.

The Arakan Army said it shares the grief of the families and relatives of those who lost their lives in the military regime's airstrikes.

In January, the regime bombed a target in Mrauk-U Township where the Arakan Army was holding junta solders and their families, killing 28 prisoners of war and family members, including women and children, and injuring 25 others.

According to a DMG tally, the military regime carried out five airstrikes on Mrauk-U from April 2024 to August 2025, killing 47 people, including children, and injuring 59.
