A girl was allegedly raped by her father in Kywekuseik Village, Ann Township, Arakan State, for six years.
The alleged perpetrator, 38-year-old U Hla Pe from Kywekuseik Village, is accused of raping his biological daughter for six years, starting when she was 12 years old and continuing until she was 18.
The abuse came to light when it was discovered at a clinic that the victim was two months pregnant due to the father's rape.
The alleged perpetrator's mother reported the incident to the United League of Arakan/Arakan Army's Department of Law Enforcement and Public Security (DLEPS), and U Hla Pe was detained and questioned by DLEPS police.
Women say rape is a frequent occurrence in Arakan State and that their safety remains under threat.
"In addition to domestic sexual violence, people are not safe from the streets to the workplace," said a 28-year-old woman from Pauktaw Township. "There are many cases of rape and murder, but the ULA [United League of Arakan] has not yet identified the real culprits, and it is like a country without a government. The rule of law is ineffective, which is why women are becoming victims of domestic violence."
Spokesperson for the Arakan Army U Khaing Thukha said that women in its controlled areas are given full legal protection, including security.
Women in Arakan State frequently face rape and sexual harassment, and women's rights activists say that lack of sex education is partly responsible for such incidents.
"Sex education is an important part of the many reasons for this kind of rape. If we can do more of these things, I think the number of rapes will decrease. For the whole society, if there are more rapists, there will be no safe place for women. I think women's groups and the relevant authorities in Arakan State need to prioritise this," said a male women's rights activist.
A court set up by the ULA has sentenced a man to 40 years in prison for raping four women in areas controlled by the Arakan Army in Arakan State, while several more cases are still under investigation.
Although the Arakan Army, which now occupies most of the townships in Arakan State, is implementing its own justice system, there are criticisms that there are still many weaknesses, including the public's lack of confidence in prosecuting rape cases.
On May 6, a 9-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Pharpyo Village, Minbya Township, and a 9-year-old girl in Hinkharaw Village, Pauktaw Township, was raped on July 28.
A woman in her 20s in Loomonepaik Village, Myebon Township, was going to the bathroom in her yard on June 20 of last year when a 24-year-old man dragged her into a nearby backhoe pit and attempted to rape her.
