Clashes between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) near the Arakan State capital, Sittwe, have intensified in recent days, with the regime reportedly providing aerial and artillery support.

On March 27, Armed Forces Day, the Arakan Army attacked the regime’s Regional Command Headquarters and nearby outposts with heavy weapons, while the regime responded with airstrikes on the border areas between Ponnagyun and Rathedaung Townships.

“Both sides exchanged heavy strikes. Yesterday, the battle intensified, with a heavy exchange of artillery fire. The regime also carried out aerial bombardments,” said a source close to the Arakan Army.

The regime reportedly used jet fighters and Y-12 aircraft to attack Mosel Island in Rathedaung Township, as well as areas near Minchaung Bridge in Sittwe Township.

Amid the intensified fighting, a large number of security personnel have been deployed at exits from Sittwe and at junta-controlled offices. Residents also said that the regime has tightened security in the town and is conducting frequent overnight guest list checks.

“Yesterday, the sound of heavy artillery could be heard throughout the day, and it only quieted after sunset. Junta officials came to check overnight guest lists twice in a single day,” said a female resident of Sittwe.

Since early 2025, clashes around Sittwe have fluctuated between periods of escalation and temporary lulls. Residents said the fighting has largely involved daily exchanges of artillery and drone attacks rather than ground offensives.

Residents of Rathedaung Township also reported hearing repeated artillery fire on the morning of March 28.

“We left the village this morning and heard heavy artillery about eight times. Since people from nearby villages have already been displaced, there may not be casualties, but we are still afraid when we hear such loud explosions,” said a resident of Mosel Island.

The regime is currently holding parliamentary sessions in Sittwe under tight security and is preparing to form the Arakan State government. Across Arakan State, clashes continue, including in Kyaukphyu and Sittwe Townships.
