The Myanmar military junta has intensified its airstrikes in recent days on towns controlled by the Chin Brotherhood (CB), according to local sources.
At around 8 p.m. on October 10, the junta carried out two airstrikes on Matupi town using 500-pound bombs, reportedly killing and injuring several civilians.
“The junta is doing whatever it dares — even bombing schools, monasteries, and churches without any fighting going on. From their point of view, they just don’t want resistance forces to be able to govern liberated areas. That’s why they are attacking,” said Salai Yaw Man, spokesperson for the Chin Brotherhood, in an interview with DMG.
The bombing of Matupi followed a series of air raids by the junta on Mindat Township earlier this week.
On October 8, junta aircraft attacked two villages in the Tainel (2) area of Mindat Township, killing three students and one woman staying at a boarding house, and injuring more than 10 others, according to reports.
The junta, which has lost control of large parts of the country, has stepped up military operations against resistance-held areas as the planned election approaches — resulting in a sharp rise in civilian casualties.
The Chin Brotherhood has declared that no elections will be held in the Mindat, Matupi, and Kanpetlet townships it controls, while the junta has continued launching repeated airstrikes on those areas.
