DMG has learned that fighting between the Myanmar military and the Arakan Army (AA) is ongoing in Sittwe Township, Arakan State, and that junta soldiers wounded by heavy weapons fire are receiving treatment not only at military hospitals but also at a civilian hospital.
From December 10 to 13, the Myanmar military and the AA exchanged heavy weapons fire in Sittwe Township. Heavy weapons fired by the AA reportedly landed on the Western Command headquarters and nearby battalions, resulting in casualties.
“Some junta soldiers are receiving medical treatment not only at military hospitals but also at the main hospital in Sittwe after heavy weapons landed on military targets,” a Sittwe resident told DMG.
The wounded soldiers are being treated in a newly built four-storey building at Sittwe General Hospital, according to local residents. Junta troops have also reportedly been deployed to provide security around the hospital.
Residents said the military regime usually treats injured soldiers at a 100-bed military hospital near Yay Chan Pyin Village in Sittwe Township, but due to the large number of casualties, some have been transferred to the civilian hospital.
Residents also reported that battalions based in Sittwe Township are frequently firing heavy weapons into areas controlled by the AA.
“There are events being held in Sittwe. The military regime is also celebrating Arakan State Day,” another Sittwe resident said.
On December 15, Lt-Gen Naing Naing Oo from the Commander-in-Chief’s Office, Western Command Commander Maj-Gen Kyaw Swa Oo and other senior officers visited wounded soldiers receiving treatment at Sittwe Hospital and provided food and cash assistance, according to a report by the junta-controlled Ministry of Information.
The AA has occupied several villages in Sittwe Township, while the military regime continues to shell Pauktaw, Ponnagyun and Rathedaung townships with artillery.
Due to the threat of heavy weapons attacks, residents of Ponnagyun and Rathedaung townships are being forced to flee their homes.
The AA has fully seized control of 14 of the 17 townships in Arakan State and is continuing to fight in Sittwe and Kyaukphyu.
