Gold prices have reached nearly K9 million per tical for 24K gold in townships controlled by the Arakan Army in Arakan State, according to gold shop owners.
Before the military coup, the price of gold was around K1.3 million per tical, but it has increased nearly sevenfold over the past five years.
Currently, the price of 24K gold stands at K8.8 million per tical, while 22K gold is priced at K8.6 million per tical in areas under Arakan Army control.
Gold traders in Kyauktaw say sales have declined due to the sharp rise in prices, with more people turning to pawnbrokers or selling their gold.
"The higher the price of gold, the fewer buyers there are. There are more people selling or pawning gold. In this situation, only big business people are buying gold," said a gold shop owner in Kyauktaw.
She added that with the rising price of gold, more people are taking out mortgages, while acceptance of collateral has become limited.
Since November 2023, Myanmar's military regime has blocked roads into Arakan State, disrupting the flow of goods and causing commodity prices to surge.
Some locals say that due to low incomes and a lack of job opportunities, more people are pawning their gold jewelry.
A woman in Myebon said, "Previously, I used to save gold with my income because I had a job. Now, with rising commodity prices and difficult work conditions, even if I want to buy and sell goods, I have to pawn or sell my gold to reinvest. With the economic downturn and the rising gold price, it's no longer possible to save."
Gold prices in Arakan State are more than K200,000 higher per tical than in mainland Myanmar, a difference attributed to high transportation and travel costs.
Businesspeople say the sharp rise in gold prices over the past five years is largely due to domestic inflation.
Local residents in Arakan State continue to face food shortages as a result of rising prices, inflation, and a lack of job opportunities.
