AA says nearly 700 clashes with Tatmadaw in 2019

The Arakan Army (AA) has said that there were at least 681 clashes lasting longer than 30 minutes between its forces and the Tatmadaw in Arakan State last year.

The Arakan Army (AA) has said that there were at least 681 clashes lasting longer than 30 minutes between its forces and the Tatmadaw in Arakan State last year.
 
In a statement on January 4, the AA offered a month-by-month breakdown of those hostilities. According to the statement, there were 29 clashes in January; 31 in February; 61 in March; 26 in April; 65 in May; 45 in June; 50 in July; 65 in August; 68 in September; 93 in October; 89 in November; and 59 in December.
 
The AA said 3,562 Tatmadaw soldiers were killed or injured in 2019, giving a similar month-by-month accounting of those casualties: 88 in January; 92 in February; 220 in March; 254 in April; 490 in May; 343 in June; 364 in July; 783 in August; 150 in September; 247 in October; 414 in November; and 117 in December.
 
The AA did not provide information on how many of its soldiers were killed or injured during the clashes.
 
There are more than 100,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of clashes in Maungdaw, Buthidaung, Rathedaung, Myebon, Minbya, Mrauk-U, Kyauktaw and Ponnagyun townships. Civil society organizations have said that more than 100 civilians have been killed and 200 injured due to the armed conflict.
