Man steps on landmine in Ponnagyun

A man from a village in Ponnagyun Township received severe injuries after he had stepped on a landmine yesterday morning, according to officials from the Rakhine Ethnics Congress (REC).

A man from a village in Ponnagyun Township received severe injuries after he had stepped on a landmine yesterday morning, according to officials from the Rakhine Ethnics Congress (REC).

U Shwe Baw Sein, chairperson of the REC, said that two villagers from Htone Bu village headed to their garden on Saturday morning and one of them stepped on the landmine.

U Tun Maung, 40, got badly injured and his both legs were at risk of amputation. He is under medical treatment at Yoetayote hospital in Ponnagyun Township.

“He stepped on a landmine on the path towards their orchard,” U Shwe Baw Sein said.

The injury to one of his legs is very severe and he needed to be transferred to Sittwe hospital, an official from Yoetayote hospital told the DMG.
