Five institutions of higher learning in Myanmar will be upgraded to government technical colleges (GTCs) in the 2022-23 academic year, including one in Kyaukphyu, Arakan State.

U Aung Mon, the principal of Kyaukphyu Government Technological Institute, told DMG that the Department of Advanced Science had received a letter on January 10 authorising the opening of a GTC in Kyaukphyu.

“Permission was granted to start a Bachelor of Technology degree. In the past, students were conferred a Bachelor of Engineering,” he explained.

Government technological institutes (GTIs) in Shwebo, Mandalay, Kyaukphyu, South Dagon, and Nay Pyi Taw will be upgraded to GTCs.

The GTC in Kyaukphyu will be the first of its kind in Arakan State.

It is unknown at this time whether the GTI in Kyaukphyu will remain open as a separate higher education entity, according ot U Aung Mon.

“The dormitories for students are being built and I think they will be completed next year,” he added.
