Three IDP men in Kyauktaw hospitalised after being electrocuted

Three displaced people living in Kyauktaw, Arakan State, are receiving medical treatment after being electrocuted on Monday, according to a local social organisation.

The three men have been identified as Maung Aung Thein Tun, 18, and Maung Kyaw Hsan, 18, from Kaviyadana displacement camp and Maung Aye Hla Tun, 17, from Maha Kangyishin IDP camp.

The three of them were electrocuted  at about 4 p.m. on March 20 when they hit a nearby electricity pole while erecting a Mytel Wi-Fi pole on Padauk Street in Kyauktaw’s Myothit Ward, said Ko Naing Win Lwin, an information officer of Phyusin Myitta social organisation.

“It was raining while they were erecting a pole. The three of them were electrocuted and injured when they hit a nearby utility pole,” he explained.

The trio are currently receiving treatment at Kyauktaw Hospital.

The accident occurred on the first day of work for the three IDPs, who are struggling to support their families, according to displacement camp officials.

“IDPs work outside the displacement camps as they no longer receive assistance,” said U Maung Thein Shwe, manager of Kyauktaw’s Kaviyadana displacement camp. “I am sorry for them as they are said to be daily-wage workers. I want people to provide IDPs as much as they can.”

Since many IDP camps in Arakan State are no longer receiving support, the affected IDPs are having trouble making ends meet and are forced to work outside the displacement camps to support their families.
