The Arakan Army (AA) has been attacking several military bases in Sittwe, the capital of Arakan State, in recent days, with the military regime responding fiercely, resulting in intense fighting on both sides, according to military sources.
The Arakan Army has launched attacks on military bases in Tawkan, Amyint Kyun, Gantgaw Kyun and Theintan villages in Sittwe Township since January 3, using heavy weapons, small arms and drones. The junta has reportedly responded with heavy weapons.
"There has been intense fighting on both sides in Sittwe Township these days. The Arakan Army has attacked some military posts near Tawkan and Amyint Kyun villages," a military source said. "As the military regime has suffered heavy losses, it has responded by attacking villages in Ponnagyun Township with heavy weapons and drones. Shooting continues on both sides today."
Military sources said the junta has also been shelling areas suspected of hosting Arakan Army troops along the Sittwe-Ponnagyun Township border with heavy weapons. On Monday, the Arakan Army reportedly attacked a military base near Tawkan Village using small arms and drones.
The military regime is also reported to be shelling Wahbo and Minhla villages in Sittwe Township, as well as Sabahtar and Kuntaung villages in Ponnagyun Township, with artillery and drones.
Residents of Sittwe said they have been hearing both heavy and small arms fire near the city since early January, with gunfire reported daily near the Military Operations Command.
Another Sittwe resident familiar with the military situation said the junta has been reinforcing its outposts following recent clashes. "The military regime has heavily reinforced its posts near Tawkan and Gantgaw Kyun villages and is trying to defend them," the resident said.
Sittwe residents also reported hearing machine gun fire and heavy weapons firing nightly near the No. 12 police battalion, Letwethone Pagoda, and the Military Operations Command.
Observers said fighting could further intensify as the Arakan Army continues to target military bases in Sittwe Township using ground assaults, drones and heavy weapons.
The Arakan Army currently controls three townships bordering Sittwe - Ponnagyun, Pauktaw and Rathedaung - and has blockaded the state capital.
