Arakan Army (AA) spokesperson U Khaing Thukha said 926 locals have been killed at the hands of Myanmar’s military regime during the battle for control of Arakan State.

At a press conference on Monday, U Khaing Thukha said that in addition to the 926 fatalities, 1,954 people were injured, and 947 were arrested by the military regime.

“The military regime has been unable to defeat the Arakan Army militarily, so it is arresting, torturing, and killing innocent civilians in the three townships it controls,” he said.

The AA spokesperson said the military regime’s air, naval, and artillery attacks have destroyed 10,502 homes, 90 religious buildings, 45 schools, 12 hospitals, 22 bridges, three UN, INGO and NGO buildings, and more than 1,100 other buildings.

U Khaing Thukha said the military regime is conducting daily air, naval, and artillery attacks on AA-held townships, as well as the three townships that the junta still controls.

“Arakanese people still feel insecure because the military regime frequently bombards areas where there is no longer fighting. We live in fear every day,” said a local woman in an area controlled by the AA.

U Khaing Thukha said the ULA/AA is working tirelessly to maintain governance, rule of law, public health, and regional development in the areas it controls, despite the regime’s maritime, air, and artillery threats.

The AA spokesperson reiterated that the main goal of the ethnic armed group, since its inception, was and is still to conquer all of Arakan State, and put it in the hands of the Arakanese people.

“The Arakan Army has occupied more than 90 percent of the territory of Arakan State and will continue to advance to the end with the ‘Way of Rakhita’, its set goal,” he said.

Of Arakan State’s 17 townships, only Kyaukphyu, Sittwe, and Manaung are still controlled by Myanmar’s military regime. The regime recently declared martial law in more than 60 townships across the country, including those occupied and controlled by the AA, a member of the Three Brotherhood Alliance.

Among the tripartite alliance, the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) and the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA) have reported facing pressure from China and have returned some of their captured towns to the military regime.

U Khaing Thukha said the AA is unlikely to similarly cede towns it has captured to the military regime.“There are some different background situations among our sister alliance organisations,” he said. “That is why I would like to say that it is unlikely that the AA will have to return the captured towns to the military regime.”
