Arakan State recorded the highest civilian casualty toll in Myanmar over the past week amid intensified military airstrikes, according to a new report by Nyan Lynn Thit Analytica (NLTA).
At least 52 civilians were killed and 87 others injured in Arakan between September 25 and October 1, the highest toll among the states and regions documented during the reporting period, NLTA said. Sagaing Region recorded the second-highest toll, with 15 civilians killed and 37 injured.
Arakan also recorded eight armed incidents during the week, the highest number nationwide. At least 34 armed incidents were documented across 19 townships in Myanmar, with combat engagements accounting for the largest share, according to the report.
Military airstrikes were the most frequently documented form of attack targeting civilians during the reporting period. NLTA recorded at least 49 civilian-targeted airstrike incidents across 24 townships in seven states and regions, killing at least 65 civilians and injuring 124.
Arakan recorded the highest number of such airstrike incidents, with 22 documented during the week, according to the Burmese-language version of the report.
The deadliest attack documented by NLTA occurred in Kyauktaw Township on September 28, when a military airstrike hit civilian areas. The report recorded 50 civilians killed and 57 injured in the attack.
The Kyauktaw attack came amid a series of military airstrikes across Arakan in recent weeks. DMG previously reported that Arakan had also recorded the highest number of armed incidents and civilian-targeted airstrikes nationwide during the preceding September 18-24 reporting period, according to NLTA.
Across Myanmar, NLTA documented at least 126 incidents involving military operations and attacks targeting civilians between September 25 and October 1. Of these, at least 34 were classified as military operations and 92 as civilian-targeted attacks.
NLTA said its report was compiled using information from 43 news media outlets and statements issued by revolutionary organisations. The research group cautioned that actual figures on the ground could be higher because unverified incidents and casualties were excluded pending verification.
