A Buddhist monk was injured in a junta airstrike on a monastery in Kyaukpyauk Village, part of Arakan State's Kyaukphyu Township, late Monday night.

A junta aircraft launched the attack on the monastery at around midnight on July 21, wounding an abbot from Zaichaung Village who was sheltering there.

"The junta jet fighter dropped two bombs on the monastery, injuring the abbot. I don't know if his injuries are serious or not because he was taken for treatment," said a local man.

The monastery and a Buddhist ordination hall were damaged in the aerial assault.

On May 24, a Myanmar Navy ship fired artillery rounds at Kyaukpyauk Village, injuring a woman from Pyainesaekay Village who was fleeing the war.

Villages such as Kyaukpyauk, Minpyin, Pyuechein and Zinchaung are located along the Yangon-Kyaukphyu highway and are frequently subjected to heavy artillery fire from Myanmar Navy ships in waters near these villages.

"The Myanmar Navy vessels are constantly stationed in the sea area from Zinchaung Village to Minpyin Village. These vessels have attacked villages, and now they are bombing villages with aircraft," lamented another local man.

Since March 2024, at least 15 people have been killed and at least 30 others injured in Kyaukphyu Township due to artillery and landmine explosions, as well as attacks by Myanmar Navy vessels and airstrikes, according to a DMG tally.

The battle for control of Kyaukphyu has been in a period of relative calm of late, with no clashes between the two sides' ground forces reported since July 10. The Myanmar regime, however, continues to shell the area with artillery from warships and ground bases, as well as launching aerial attacks.
