A woman from Min Tae Village, West Pharongkha Island, also known as Myengu Island, Pauktaw Township, was injured when artillery shells fired by the junta navy in Sittwe Township exploded nearby.
The victim, 27-year-old Ma Hla Than Nu, was fishing along the riverbank on September 17 when a junta navy shell landed and exploded close to her, causing injuries.
“A shell hit a nearby rock, and fragments struck her. She was hit in the chest by shrapnel, but thankfully the injury was not too serious,” said local resident Ko Kyaw Soe Naing from Myengu Island.
On September 17, junta navy forces stationed along the Kaladan River in Sittwe fired artillery toward Myengu Island, while also opening fire with small arms at fishing boats, locals said. Due to the attacks, many fishing boats from Myengu Island have been unable to go out to fish.
“The fishing boats have not gone out until now. People are just waiting and watching the situation. That day, they even fired automatic rifles at boats on the river for no reason—just shooting randomly,” a local man said.
Junta battalions based in Sittwe and naval units on the river frequently fire artillery toward Pauktaw Township across the Kaladan River, with civilian casualties reported.
On July 12, a 17-year-old girl from Min Tae Village was also seriously injured when a junta artillery shell struck her.
