The Arakan Army (AA) attacked a junta convoy with landmines near Minywa, part of Arakan State’s Minbya Township, at about 10 a.m. on Thursday, according to locals.
The regime soldiers were ambushed by the AA near a monastery on the Yangon-Sittwe road while returning from Mt. Ngasinyaing Chaung east of Minywa.
“We don’t know exactly the number of regime soldiers. An exchange of fire broke out between the military and AA following the landmine attack. We also don’t know how many regime soldiers were killed in the AA’s landmine attack,” said a local resident of Ngasinyaing Chaung Village.
Myanmar military personnel have been stationed at a camp on Mt. Ngasinyaing Chaung since 2019. Regime soldiers sometimes enter nearby villages to buy food as the AA set up a security checkpoint near Rar Maung Bridge.
“I think the junta soldiers were heading to Ngasinyaing Chaung Village as they ran out of food due to the AA’s blockade. The AA attacked the junta soldiers with landmines,” said a local in Minywa Village.
Since renewed fighting began on November 13, clashes have continued to escalate in Arakan State and have spread to almost all 17 townships in the state, with the number of displaced civilians rising daily.
